Metro Changers
BMBA is excited to have Metro Changers as a ministry serving Birmingham Metro in the area of home rehabilitation. Incorporated in 2007, Metro Changers is a 501(c)3 that utilizes volunteers to improve housing for low-income residents of Birmingham and share the love of Christ through giving and caring. Metro Changers is located on the second floor of the BMBA Partner Center located at 1449 Medical Park Drive in Birmingham, Alabama.
Metro Changers is a service organization dedicated to improving housing conditions for people with low incomes, the elderly, those with disabilities, people with health problems, and veterans or spouses of veterans. The people we serve are unable or cannot afford to properly maintain their property. So together with amazing volunteers, we paint homes, repair or replace roofs, build accessibility ramps, and repair or rebuild decks. Essentially we make their homes safer and more livable. But even more important, we make homeowners proud of their homes again and help improve Birmingham’s communities.
One of Metro Changers’ biggest needs is volunteers. The more volunteers we have, the more houses we can repair and the more Birmingham residents we can serve. Volunteers are typically individuals, civic and faith-based groups, corporate employees, those in need of service hours and others who want to make a difference in the Birmingham community. Many of our volunteers are local, but we’ve had groups come from as far away as Hawaii and Alaska.
We match the tasks to the volunteer’s skill set and capabilities, so no experience is required. Volunteers work side-by-side with other volunteers that have specific construction and home repair skills.
Our volunteers are tired at the end of the day, but they love every minute of it. They see the immediate results of their work, not only to the home’s improvements, but on the faces of the homeowners and their families. Nothing is more rewarding and life-changing than reaching out your hand to lift up someone else.
If you would like to volunteer at Metro Changers, just go for it! Even a little bit of your time can make a big difference in so many lives. The only requirements we have to volunteer are a positive attitude, a caring heart, and a willingness to work.
Simply contact us by phone at (205)599-3245 or by email at michaele@bmbaonline.org and we will work with the group leader to complete the paperwork, determine your group’s skill level, match the group to a project, and schedule the workdays.
Metro Changers’ primary funding source, about 60 percent, comes from the City of Birmingham Community Development Office. The remaining 40 percent comes from churches, corporations, foundations, and private donors.
Our non-profit is highly appreciative of the support Metro Changers receives. And we’re also very proud of the return we give donors on their investment, as they estimate Metro Changers has scheduled and organized over 10.2 million dollars worth of volunteer efforts since 2007 on repairs and improvements to homes throughout the city.
